Physics 495:  Introduction to Apparatus Fabrication

II.  Materials Needed:

Notebook Paper
Calculator with trigonometric functions
Safety glasses (non-prescription are provided)
Appropriate clothes (no loose clothing or sandals)
Optional (Reference Books):
Machinery's Handbook    Industrial Press Inc.
Machine Shop Practices   by K. H. Moltrecht
Machine Tool Practices   by Kibbe, Neely, Meyer, & White

III.  Attendance:  Students are expected to attend all meetings.  Please be sure to arrive on time for the class.


IV.  Shop Project/Assignments:  There is one machine shop project that will take the entire semester to complete.  It is a ball peen hammer that will be machines from different types of metals.  it will require lathe and mill set-ups to complete.  I will give brief lectures and demonstrations as needed throughout the course according to the pace of the class.  There will be at least one blue print reading assignment during the semester.


V.  Exams and Grades:  There will be a final exam on the last meeting of the class.  The exam will consist of questions about shop safety and common shop practices.  Faithful attendance and participation almost guarantees a good grade on the final.  Grades will be assigned according to the following percentages:
Shop project and assignments - 60%
Final exam: - 25%
Shop safety, participation, and attendance - 15%
Grade scale is:   A  90-100%;  B  80-89%;  C  70-79%;  D  60-69%
